Shaver

(Dave) ‘Shaver’ lived here until he was 90. He lived in Peasenhall all his life and worked on farms . He was fairly short and people underestimated his strength. He told the story of how an old employer knocked at his door and asked to see the ‘boy’. Shaver made him wait until he’d had his dinner. The farmer couldn’t understand how something worked in his barn that Shaver had done. He demanded Shaver return to the farm to explain, but Shaver told him he would have to pay him to return, which the farmer didn’t like but had to agree. He also couldn’t work out how Shaver had shifted heavy weights/bales, because Shaver looked small but was quite strong.

Shaver enjoyed fishing, and had lots of prizes. He told me about cycling to Dunwich with his mates who then – at Westleton – remembered they’d left the bait at home. Shaver cycled back to P’hall, and then returned back to Dunwich to fish.

Shaver was a stalwart of the Bowls club and looked after the green.

In later years he had an electric mobility bike but little stopped him living an active life – I have seen him strimming his grass edges whilst moving on his mobility bike.

Always talkative and cheerful.

Died in 2019.

He told me he wasn’t worried about dying as he had several strokes already and had died before.
